Ski Bunny

Nothing says Christmas break like an awesome ski holiday!

Up with the fam at the mountain getting my ski on...still no running and no yoga, but I'm getting my cardio on with lots of swooshing down the mountain!

Christmas was great, managed to grab a 3 mile run along with about a million calories and tons of presents! Hootiehoo!

Back to reality in a few days, we got about 18 inches of snow, but I'm hoping that when I get back the roads will be clear enough for a road run. Also looking forward to trying out my new Manduka Black Mat!!

Head Colds Rock!

Wow, I have the mother of all head colds going on right now. I'm a snotty, eye dripping mess. Better now than on Christmas, but yowza, it's killer.

Running partner and I have decided to embark on a tri this summer. We made it official - aside from writing my name in blood, I made the commitment and am prepared to follow through.

We have to get an official training plan, which should be pretty easy, we both know a bunch of coaches. The good news is we are both pretty good on the bike and running, and are not terrible with swimming (although we need major work in that area).

I'm kind of excited to have a goal (aside from the marathon, but that's a whole other post). Plus the prospect of swimming throughout the winter really interests me, I loved it over the summer, and actually miss being in the water.

So yay for goals, boo for head colds...off to go blow my nose.

Top 10 of 2010

I used to say stuff like, wow this is a Top 10 moment....I sort of wish I wrote those moments all down...compiling this list is turning out to be a little difficult!

In no particular order, here goes:

10.Tap class with the girls, hands down the best way to spend a monday night!

9.That one amazing ski day up at Okemo in Feb where the stars aligned and I was Sara Vaugn (or something like that)

8.The Tri-Mitzvah!

7.Swimming at the Babylon Village Pool 2x a week at 6am. Epic, really.

6.All my PR's, but the one that comes to mind as truly "top 10" worthy is the PO 5k

5.So not really my grandma's death, but my dad's entire family in the same room because of grandam's death (this has never happened in all of my 33 years of living).

4.The boy (it was a long time coming)

3.Not stopping at all during the Hampton's Half

2.All those times I yelled out during the summer "top 10 moment"

1. I'm going to come back to this one.....still thinking....

Just Saying...

...Having a boy around makes working out tough.

He's cute and I'll definetely keep him around, but my workouts are suffering! Early mornings are a thing of the past, weekends, psst...we are sleeping. It's bad.

On a bright note, I am still down with the yoga.

Back to my usual rant - need to find me some good 'ol balance!

Yoga Challenge Update

I challenged myself to 30 days of yoga. I managed 19.

19 classes is more than half, so I feel like the challenge was a success! I suck at challenges, almost always quit before the halfway point. It's all part of my defiant nature. (For my FOB's I'm working step 6 on this shit!)

In all seriousness, I really do feel like this was a success, I made a ton of classes, went back to the hot yoga shala, tried out a new studio, met a few new teachers.

I never imagined that almost a year ago after that Ashram visit that I would really become a yogini. I though, well this is nice, I'll hang out with some hippies, practice a few asanas, eat tofu...no big deal. Never would I imagine that I would have such a fire for yoga. It's so amazing the different paths we take and how those paths really can change the way we live life. I'm just amazed sometimes.

I sort of feel like like the challenge is still on - I would really like to plan out a month or a time where I can consecutively practice for 30 days in a class setting. I sort of haphazardly decided on this challenge, not really looking at my calendar/work sched. I'll figure it out, but for now I'm going to keep practicing as often as I can. I have some mini-goals that I would like to achieve...ahhemmm...headstand!!!

I did walk away with some awesome insights-

I can put my mind to something and do it (remember, I'm a bailer, so my 19 classes = success!)

Full wheele ROCKS!

I need to leave the gym more often and find other places to practice.

I love my gym and my amazing teachers.

All this breathing has really helped with my running.

Sex is better (holla!!!)

I love a heated room with no mirrors. I do not need to look at my arm flab while in warrior 2

So what's next? Maybe a 30 day gym program - I'm in need of weights and some different cardo (always along with running!!).

Stay tuned!

Blog Stats? Who Knew!!

Wow, call me late to the party!!

I had no idea that I could see all my stats! I mean, I hear other bloggers talk about that, but I just assumed they had downloaded a program, or used Google analytics...it never occurred to me that Blogger would provide me my own little "stats" tab!

I assumed I had a few readers based on my sporadic comments, I know in the early days there was much more activity, but that was because I was way more active with comments, Daily Mile...ect. But now that I know...I'm OBSESSED! LOL. Actually, I'm flattered. I'm sort of a bad blogger - my posts are short, I'm rarely funny, no pics....but still you read! Thanks guys!! Who knew my little boring blog would be ready by a few, and some from Russia! Crazy :)

SJB Run Your Turkey Off - 1st in AG!!

Ok, so it was a really small race, but I placed...and 1st no less!!!!

I actually hated everything about this run. I was not into it, my breathing was way off, I had lead legs, I think my pace was something like 9:04, not my best showing, but I placed in my AG nonetheless. Imagine that!

30 Day Yoga challenge - this has been really tough for me, but I have to say I have made more classes that not and I am constantly aware of my practice and what it means to me. Even though I haven't made a class a day, I still feel good and will continue to challenge myself. 10 days left - hoping to finish strong!

Stats:
4k
Flat and fast
Final time 22:36.5
Pace: 9:06
Weather: Cold and damp

Evelyn Knapp Memorial Run

Great run on Sunday over at Sunken Meadow!! I headed over to the "Knapp" run with Hapi, Chrissy and Adam. Chrissy and I ran the 5k, Adam killed the kids run..tee-hee. He's too cute.

This is an awesome, challenging course. Sunken Meadow is home to both Snake and Cardiac Hills - these 2 are killer, but I love hills, so it was all good.

I was happy with my time - especially since this was a challenging XC race...

Time: 31:15
Distance: 5k
Place: AG 10/20, overall 234/455
Sunny, cool in the 40's but protected by the trees

Arm Flab

Wow. I just saw a pic from the Warior Run and I have arm flab....no, not in the lunch lady sense, but forearm flab.. I kind of want to curl up and die right now...

On a brighter note, food has been good, 30 day yoga challenge has been great.

Ran a quick mile this morning on the mill, just to warm up for class....but hey, it still counts!

11/14 Hope for the Warriors Run (PR!!)

Sunday I ran my new favorite race EVER.

To be honest, I wasn't all that into it and missed most of the opening ceremony which I heard was really nice. I now kind of regret that as it was an amazing race all around.

I picked up my packet on Sat so I could take my time getting to the start - BIG mistake, almost all the roads leading to the start were shut down, Running Partner and I almost had it out in the car (love her!!) then settled down and parked about .25 mile away, which was perfect as we needed to get a warm-up run in anyway.

The start was really moving, tons of people, bag pipers, flags, just amazing! The 5k runners had a 3 minute lead, then our gun went off. We got a little tripped up with the walkers from the 5k, but all was well and everyone was pretty calm about it.

I'm not sure of my splits as I decided to run sans Garmin, but I felt strong and a little slow, then a little fatigued, but I kept on. I was surprised at my final time 57:44, 9:17 pace...I though for sure I was moving waaay slower than that.

Overall it was a great day, saw friends from Tri and Du It as well as Massapequa Road Runners. Also met some of the Cross Fit Lindy folks...I think that's my next move!!!!

30 Days Of Yoga

I'm challenging myself to 30 days of yoga.

I've been feeling stressed and cranky and I think a little yoga goodness may help.

I hate challenges, I almost always bail, so this will be a real test for me. It will also be interesting to see how I balance the rest of my workouts in. The goal is to make a class a day, but if I have to, a simple home practice will do.

Ok, here goes.....

Tue was day 1 - full wheel, wee!
Weds - 6:30 am, my favorite
Tonight will be hot! Hoping to sweat out my cold!! (didn't go, too sick :( )
Fri 11/12 - Happy Hour with Angela, awesome class!

A Different Kind Of PR

Yesterday was Marathon Sunday in NYC. Sadly I didn't even watch it on TV (was at an engagement party).

I've been battling a cold for almost 2 weeks, one of those annoying I'm not really sick, but a little sick type of deals. It's put a damper on my running, but not on my fitness. Been to the gym a bunch, a 3 mile tempo on sat and finally an amazing yoga class yesterday where I FINALLY got into wheel (chakra-asana)!

Yessss! Finally.

Although not terribly difficult, wheel has been a challenge for me. I got into it once (assisted) at the ashram, and possibly one other time on my own. I put it down for awhile and just recently started to work it back into my practice. I was able to get into the full posture with no problems, although coming out of it was a bit akward.

So stoked. Now let's see if I can do it again :)

Hampton's Half And a PR!!

Hootiehoo! Ok, this race rocked! First off, I PR'd! By 6 minutes!

I'm so excited by this for a number of reasons:
  • it's not an easy flat course
  • last year this was my 3rd big race, so I had built up to my pace
  • I plain killed it

I worked pretty hard this year, even though at times I didn't think so, I managed to pull 10 minute miles, not stopping and I felt great all along the course. I have to say though that I think the official time was a bit off, unfortunately mt GPS died at mile 10, but I'm going to go with it...

Gym partner finished 4 minutes ahead, I'm so proud of her! This was her first race and she really worked it!

So now the question is, what's next?

Race Stats:
Date: 10.2.10
Finish: 2:11:05
Pace: 10:04
Place: AG - 69/176, overall - 357/859
Weather: crisp and cool, around 59ish/60's

Ahh...No Time!

I honestly don't know where the time goes! It's been awhile since my last post, which is no bueno! I love my blog, catching up on other blogs, the whole bloggy deal, but I just have not been able to keep up with my own posts!

The past month has been pretty exciting, lots of running, a few 10 milers in prep for my half next weekend, lots of gym time, some new aerobics classes, a couple of makeouts :) and a lot of time at the beach (yahoo Indian Summer).

This weekend I'm heading out to Montauk with some friends for a nice beach weekend. Looking forward to at least one run, but I'm ok if it's short. I've been managing all of my long runs before work which has been amazing, I'm so glad gym partner can get up and go at 5am, makes life so much easier when I don't have to run long on the weekends!

I Deserve That Bagel Goddammit!!

8 miles, before work, on about 5 hours of sleep! Hootie-hoo!!

I got up around 5:30, dreading this run, but I knew I had to do it. Sleep or no sleep I have about 1 month until the half, do or die time. Gym Partner and I met up at 5:45 and did what we had to do. I'm still amazed at how much more I can accomplish with a partner. We averaged out a 10:22 per mile with mile 7 at 9:40 which surprisingly felt really good. Also really good, no pooping!

Birthday Love

Wow, I love birthday's - mine, yours, strangers....I guess I love a good reason to celebrate. And eat. And check FB a million times to see who wrote on my wall :)

Yesterday I turned 33. Holy cow, 33. I'm pretty ok with that number, I'm still in my early 30's which is just one of the many things I'm grateful for this year.

The past week or so has been a little all over the place training wise. I've gotten in a few runs, a yoga class and bailed on my long run. My grandma passed away last week, so life has been a tad hectic. I'll get back to long runs next week.

Today, the day after I turned 33, with one more birthday celebration planned, I'm just going to be - no worries about the calories, lack of an 8 mile run or anything else. Just be and enjoy!!

One For The Record Books

Short post (aren't they all?)....crazy week, my grandma passed away, tons of family in town (many who haven't seen each other in 20 years), therapy and a dress fitting. I'm wiped!

Ok, so this morning, gym partner and I ran 3.5....FAST.
mile 1: 9:38
Mile 2: 9:20
Mile 3: 9:40 (had to poop, so we slowed down)
Mile 3.5: I forgot

I say FAST because I haven't seen consistent 9's in well over a year. Last year was all about LSD runs and half marathon's, so I said bye-bye to speed and hello to endurance. This year I'm hoping to get faster for longer periods of time.

I have a half marathon on the books for Oct, possibly a 20k in Sept, I would like to PR, which means speed work and a diet...which is going well!!

Sappy Post Ahead

So swimming at the BV Pool is almost over...bummer! One of the lifeguards may come in 1x per week for us early swimmers, but it's still up in the air. In the meantime, I need to find a new pool stat - although I'm sure nothing will compare to my awesome 6am crew!! I never, ever imagined in my wildest dreams that I would be swimming at 6am with really amazing strangers (now friends) who have willingly given me their time, advice and lively conversation. Not to get all sappy like, but these are the little things that make me so glad I did a complete 180 with my life!

Week at a Glance

Because this blog is mainly for me, I use it to look back and see where I've been , where I'm headed ect, soooooo... here are my stats for the week, ya know, so I can look back next year and see what I did (I'm so not into a log book, obvi).

Mon - 6 miles
Tue - swam 16 lengths, leg and back work out
Weds - wanted off, ran 2 instead
Thurs - 20 lengths, last 6 with no kicking (trippy)
Fri - planning a run (updated 8/6 - ran 5 miles)
Sat - off, heading to Montauk, maybe a short beach run
Sun - dealers choice, have a 10am wedding so nothing too time consuming

PS....swimming gives me the munchies, big time!!!!

So That's How You Do It!!

So after not really loving my swim last week, I was more than excited to get back into the pool yesterday. My real thoughts were how much worse could it be? So I got up at 5:30, prepped my hair (I am super fearful of green hair, already happened once this summer) and headed down to the pool. My gym partner bailed because her son hid her goggles, so I was flying solo. Luckily I ran into an acquaintance of mine (Bob) who is training to be some type of Iron Man coach (as well as compete in IMAZ)....more on that in a bit.

I set up far away from Bob, I know he has his own training to do, and he intimidates me with his master swimming abilities, so I make friends with old lady Terry who is sharing my lane with me and I go about my biznass.

First 2 laps suck! I mean I seriously could not get it together, after each length I had to take a minute at the wall to catch my breath. So, at this point I'm guessing I'm just going too fast so I slow my pace and soldier on...fortunately I got into a groove and didn't have to take too many breathing breaks. I decided to call it a day after my 16th (!!) lap, all ready to head out, then Bob calls me over. I was ready to go, but always the willing student I went, plus I was interested in his critique...

Apparently I hold my head all wrong, which is creating a huge drag (damn Irish head) and making me tired. We went over proper form, I swam 2 kick ass laps and was told that I was a natural!! Other than the way I hold my head and lead arm, I'm actually pretty good...who knew?!?!? I am now SUPER EXCITED for laps tomorrow!

On a running note, both today and Monday ran 3 at 6am then headed to the gym for weights with gym partner. 3 solid workouts with one more to go....dayum, I'm on a roll!!

Swim Time

After months of writing, thinking and talking about swimming laps, I finally did it! And it sucked! Ok, maybe not sucked, but it's definitely not my first love (but really, what is?).

An acquaintance of mine who I have known for quite some time was telling me about the early morning swim at the Village pool, and after making plans with my gym partner we decided to give it a whirl. I have to say I was a little nervous, thinking that I would not be able to keep up, or understand how to share a lane, put my cap and goggles on correctly, you know the drill. I got there just at 6 (am!) and was pleasantly surprised by the crowd, some old guys, my most favorite yoga instructor (in a speedo) and some kids training for their lifeguard exam. Not too bad, better than a bunch of killer athletes, little did I know the old guys would smoke me, but that's another story!

I waited around for my partner, who was waiting for me in the parking lot and left (need to plan better), didn't see her and decided, it's now or never and jumped in.

My first lap was a little fast and I was out of breath, I pulled back the second and took a break at the wall. I managed 8 lengths and called it a day. I'm planning on going every Tue and Thurs and am excited to see how much I can improve before the end of the summer. I'm still fearful of sharing lanes and proper etiquette, but I'm sure I'll figure it out, or I'll just get run over by one of the old guys!

My Life as a Weightlifter?

I'm thinking I might need to change the title of my blog from "runner" to "weightlifter". I have really not ran at all, which is terrible, but I have been weight training, so a name change might be in order.

Life has been so sweet lately, lots of food, fun, friends, beach and spa! Went out to Gurneys in Montauk this past weekend for a bachelorette party, such a great time, I could seriously live there. I was bummed that I didn't brig my sneakers, would have been nice to get a run in along the path to the beach...next time! I love a good girls getaway and highly recommend Gurneys, although a bit pricey, it's totes worth it!

This weekend is more beach and I'm thinking the Arrow Women's 5k. I ran it last year in the oppressive heat and was sooooo disappointed by my time. I wanted to give up running after that race. It was a tough lesson for me to learn, that I although I had increased my distance, my speed went out the window. I may just run it to see where I come in, although I have a feeling I won't do so hot considering my running has been rather nonexistent!

Happy Belated 4th!

A July 4th pictorial!

So I ate a ton, beached it, hung poolside, went to the Yankee game, a few BBQ's, Zumba, a measly 2 mile run and had lots of fun....couldn't have asked for a better 5 days off!! Oh, and helped rescue a baby deer that was hit by a car (hit and run...how cruel!).

Holy Busy!

I have been NUTS. All good stuff which includes lots of running, gym time, friends, family, a Tri-Mitzvah (?!?!?, sort of like a bat mitzvah but with 3 celebrants), a hilly as a mofo 10k race, signed up for a half and assorted other stuff. Soooo, I'll be back with an extra long post :)

Tonight's the Night!

The Challenge is over and we find out the winners tonight!! SO excited! I did so/so. My diet is what really killed me, but I more than doubled my push ups, increased my flexibility, killed the cardio - all good stuff! I lost next to no weight, disappointing, yes, but I'm focusing on the positive - I had a great 8 weeks, I have 3 great training partners, I'm feeling better than ever and I have a morning workout routine.

Onto the running....my running has been great, which is totally because of all the added strength training. I go out and kill my runs, which I'm so stoked about. I'm excited to start racing to see some official times. Other than that, life has been pretty status quo (sp?)!

It's the Final Countdown!

As this was my last week before the final fitness evaluation, one would think that I would be on my best behavior. Sadly, that is not the case. I had pizza. Yes, the no-no food of all no-no foods. BUT, I'm OK with it. I didn't go for 3rds and I didn't go back for more the next day. I'm just ever so reminded that pizza is the devil and if I have a shitty weigh in, I know why. Actually, in total Liz fashion I'm sort of self sabotaging....but I'll tell that to my therapist, not the entire blogosphere. It's one of those terrible things I do to myself, instead of going all out, I sort of give up in subtle ways.

But in better, more blog-worthy news, I'm psyched to see my final numbers! I know my body fat percentage has changed dramatically, so it will be exciting to see how much - although I'm not sure if they will give them to me tomorrow or if I have to wait until the party to find out. I'm also a little anxious as I'm bummed that my weight hasn't changed. I think I may have been expecting too much, but I can only blame myself, I didn't really diet (I did make waaaay better food choices though).

Here is my recap of the week exercise wise:
Mon - 4 mile run
Tue - weights with the girls
Weds - final workout with the trainers, yoga at night (sweated my balls off)
Thurs - yoga where I again sweated my other set of balls off
Today - short run after work

Not sure about this weekend, may do a 5 mile trail run on Sun if the weather holds out (crossing fingers). Was supposed to run a 5k tomorrow, but the evaluation is at the same time so I had to bail.

Holiday Weekends Rule!

I love me a good 3 day weekend!! That extra day makes everything so much better! But alas, back to work I go...

I had a pretty good week, managed to run a ton and practice yoga which I have been skimping on with all of the additional weight training. The yoga was tough, but mainly because of my knee. The fall from the other day has made it hard to put weight on my knee cap. I'm pretty sure it's no big deal, but I'm keeping a close eye on it just in case.

Sat morning was a vinyasa class with one of my favorite teachers followed by a 3 mile run. Sun was a lazy day, which should have been a strength training day, but oh well, I can't do everything! Yesterday I ran 4 plus my tap class, and this morning I hit the weights with the girls for an hour. I may run after work, with my final eval for the fantastic 4 thing is Sat I'm considering 2 a days...plus it's hard to fit in both weights and cardio before work.

Splat!

Awesome, amazing pre-summer night last night! I was feeling a little sluggish all day, but had planned for a 4mi run and was sticking with it! I had to drop off money to the dance studio which is 2 mi away, perfect mid evening jaunt....or so I thought.

So I'm in deep contemplation, actually composing an email to my boss in my head re: my increase, all serious like, then it happened...BAM, the ground broke my fall. I tripped on something at a crosswalk and just went down, luckily I jumped right up (adrenaline, baby!) and got myself to the other side. Embarrassed, not so much. In pain, yes. I walked a bit, then actually jogged the rest of the way home, but man my knee cap is KILLING ME!!! It's swollen and scrapped. I'm sure it's nothing major, but christ-on-a-bike it hurts. I'm grateful though that it's my good knee, woo!!

As far as the actual run went, it was a good one. Kept my HR in a good spot and kept it consistent. My pace was in the high 9's and most importantly I felt great. If it wasn't for the fall I probably would have upped my mileage. Oh well.

This morning with the trainers was rough. I legit almost cried twice, not sure what that was about, other than my knee being on fire and the fact that we did a series of squat lunges and push-ups which took me to the breaking point. We also weighed in, down the 1 lb I gained, but other than that I have lost no weight. WTF! I did bring my body fat percentage down, but for some reason that number on the scale means more to me.

2 Weeks Left!

Wow, only 2 weeks left of the Fantastic Four competition! I'm sort of sad it's almost over. I'm really loving the training and the group - the girls and I decided that we would keep on training, I may also throw in some training session with one of the guys, but I have to pay my taxes first (damn the man!!).

I think the hardest thing about all this training is keeping my attitude about food in check. It's like I almost feel entitled to eat a bagel after my morning workout, which is so NOT good for me! I'm not eating terrible, but things could be better. I'm basically balancing things out, I'm not really losing pounds - although I know that my body fat percentage has gone way down and that I'm converting over fat to muscle, but I was hoping for weight loss numbers. I have to keep this all in perspective - I'm doing great things, gaining muscle, consistency and am really enjoying this, so note to self....don't F this up and go all harey-carey and eat pizza!

Balance Please!

I hate to be that blogger that never blogs, but not a lot has been going on. Food has been so so and the workouts have been great. I need to step up my running, and I think part of the problem is that I don't really have anything in the pipeline in terms of races. I need to fix that stat! I have also let my yoga practice slip a bit.

It's so hard to find the time to fit everything in!! I often wonder how people with dogs and families manage to do it all! Seriously, I have no kids, a cat that can take care of herself and I still can't manage it all! Work is a big part of my day, same with some of my after work commitments (meetings, advisory stuff). Maybe I'm just lazy? Or not as dedicated? Nah....I'm dedicated...6 am workouts are now my norm!!!

OK, so as far as goals go - back to balance, and a nice race to train for!!

All About The Numbers

3lbs down (not that great - it has been 4 weeks, should be better)
5lb muscle gain (awesome)
1500 calories (trying my hardest to stay within)
5 days in the gym (so far so good)
3 runs a week (could maybe add on some miles, but I'm happy with 3)
5:15 am wake up (hell yea!)
7 - 8 hours of sleep per night (could use some more, hey, I'm a sleeper!)

Yea 5:30!

I am officially a morning worker-outer!!! For the past 4 weeks I have made everyone of my early morning workouts! I know it may seem like no biggie, but for me it's huge..holla.

I'm finally starting to see a bit of a difference with my body. I'm only down 2lbs, but I've lost more that 2% body fat. I'm really working it hardcore - lots of strength training with my group training thing, and back to regular running, even some two-a-days. The crappy thing about the running is that I'm back to having a sour stomach. Both Sat and Sun I was DYING by the second mile. Brutal.

I'm also counting calories. Tracking on Daily Plate, which I absolutely love. I'm hoping this will help me keep my food in gear and I'll start to see better weight loss.

With the exception of today, I'm surprisingly not too tired. I hope I can keep all of this up!!

Must Throw Out The PB!

To be exact, it's Dark Chocolate Dreams. It keeps me up at night that's how good it is. It's like crack and it's going in the garbage. I think that's why I'm not losing weight...but dayum it's delish!

Consistency is King

Wow, what a difference a little consistency makes! I have always known that from my running, but I'm really finding out with the strength training that the more consistent I am, the easier and better it gets!

I'm loving the Fantastic Four training. I'm done with my second week and I can already tell that I'm getting stronger! Hooray! Hopefully my lunch lady arms will be gone my summer (or at least labor day!!). My cardio has always been good, but I'm also seeing the difference a HRM makes! I took a spin class this morning and made sure I was reaching my zones, made for a much more consistent ride! I wasn't all over the place trying to guess where I should be.

I'm also really happy to report that my food has been pretty good (was going to say consistent but thought that may be overkill :) ) No breads and very little sugar. lots of salads, veggies, yogurt and protein. I did have a Ralph's Ice, but I'm staying away from now on! I also made salmon cakes for the first time, used a mix of oats and oatbran in place of the breadcrumbs - not too bad, but they could have used a little more seasoning. I'm trying to eat all my midweek meals at home, so I'll be trying some new and interesting things in the next few weeks.

Now I just need to get my run on! Depending on the weather I may go out for a run tonight, if not I have a few runs planned for the weekend - a trail run and a prediction run put on by one of the local running shops.

Back On The Wagon!

Killer workout with the "daddy's" (umm....I mean trainers) again this morning. I'm really working my ass off, which I hope help keeps my ass off.....or in my case my huge gut. I HAVE to get my food in order, which is happening RIGHTNOW!!! I'm not going to excel if I don't really buckle down in the food department.

This weekend was pretty interesting, I'm involved with service in young people's AA, which is amazing, but at times a ton of work. We were up in Burlington for EACYPAA 8 which I'm on the advisory council for. Not a lot of time for fun, sleeping or eating well, but I managed to get a short gym workout in - 2 mile run with some quick arm's thrown in for good measure. (note to self - next year pack all my own healthy food...no more crap!)

I was planing in a big run sun morning, but it was really crappy out, so I slept in, which to be honest was probably the best thing for me considering my body desperately needed sleep....and veggies. Before we headed back home we went over to Healthy Living Market - which is sort of like a whole foods. Had an amazing salad then took off for home.

Ok, so onto my goals/schedule for the week:
Mon: Workout done, tap class tonight
Tue: Not sure, most likely a run after work
Weds: Fantastic Four session
Thurs:Pump and Jump class, run
Fri: Strength training
Weekend....Running!!!!!

Fantastic Four

My gym is so great, not only do they have killer classes, cleanliness and overall greatness going for them they also run these really cool contests for members (at a fee of course!).

This spring season is the Fantastic Four - Fit 4 Summer Challenge! Basically a million groups of four compete against each other for the next 8 weeks. Each team meets with a trainer twice a week for an hour session, follows a diet plan and tries to rock it on their own for a chance to win prizes and the "title" at the end. I was skeptical to join past challenges, but was won over by all of the success stories I saw so I decided to give it a go this time around.

So far I've had 2 sessions, both were great. We are doing a strength/cardio circuit that is absolutely killer - think weights, followed by squats, followed by push ups, followed up by....you get the picture! The diet part I'm struggling with a bit - it's not foreign to me, they basically want you to cut out sugar/flour/wheat which is something I did for months, but am reluctant to follow again - I felt too restricted and by the end I was hungry for all the "bad" stuff I couldn't eat. Even though I felt good while on it, once I went off I was a mess (think 10lb gain over the course of a few months). I'm really trying to watch my food and eliminate the sugar. I've cut back, with the goal of no processed sugar by next week.

I'm really excited to see how I progress over the next 8 weeks, the motivation is not only the health/weight loss benefits, but I'm cheap and this is expensive!! :)

Training so far this week:
Mon - Half hour with trainer
Tue - Abs/arms class
Weds - Hour with trainer
Thurs - not sure - maybe spin after work
Fri - Off, heading to Burlington VT for a conference which leaves my weekend workouts looking spotty, hoping to get a run in Sat. morning.

Basterds!

I didn't get in....so annoying, Plus (and I'm sure I shouldn't say this) I have a connection at NYRR. Oh well, next year I have guaranteed entry.

Side note - sorry for the delay on this post, bloggy land was not working for me yesterday. Couldn't get in to write a post!

The Mother of all Marathons....Countdown to Lottery Drawing

Today is the official NYRR lottery day! At 12:00 I will find out of I will run my first ever marathon in the motherland (NYC). I'm crossing my fingers and toes in anticipation. If I don't get in this year, I'm guaranteed next year...but still...I want in like BAD!!

Goals!

So I'm proud to say that I hit all my workout goals for the weekend:
Fri: 20 mile bike
Sat: hot yoga class
Sun: 8 mile run
Monday: arms and abs at the gym (half hour)

Yay for goals!

I'm always talking about my workout commitment issues, but am FINALLY doing something about it! I'm really motivated, and want to keep motivated so I joined this training thing at my gym which starts next week, have some awesome new running partners and am going to stick to a plan for at least 30 days - with no interruptions (to the best of my ability).

This week is looking like:
Today: workout done, dance class tonight
Tue: 3 or 4 mile run, yoga
Weds: 20 mile bike
Thurs: Off
Fri: Run/yoga
Sat: yoga/weights - nothing too heavy
Sun: 10 miler!!!!

Thursday is the New Friday

I am so overjoyed that today is my last day of work for the week. I love me a 3 day weekend...plus it's absolutely beautiful out! Mid 60's..woohoooo!!

Lots of great stuff planned for this weekend. I'm going for a ride tomorrow with my favorite riding partner EVER. We have a flat 25 miler planned, I may also add a quick 1 mile run immediately following - I have to start getting my legs used to transitioning. I'm planning on a Mother's Day Du and would like to actually train for this one (although I did place 3rd in my AG last time :) ) Sat I'm taking a hot yoga class (free!) at a new studio that opened not too far from me. Then Sun I'm running the trail (planning on 7 miles). Lot's of great stuff happening!

I've been pretty active this week, ran twice, spin class. I'm taking today off, I couldn't get my butt out of bed this morning and I'm having my parents over for dinner. I also got a new HR monitor for the gym. I hate not knowing where I am with my workouts, and I have a feeling I am under-training.

Food has been so, so. I ate a slice of pizza which is an absolute no food for me. I'm back on track today, so it's all good!

Monday Funday!

I've probably blogged about this before, but I love Monday's. For real. I like the fresh start, the new goals for the week, going back to a 'routine'. I like a little structure and Monday provides me with just enough. I may also be a little nuts, considering the workload I have, but whatevs!

I'm officially done with skiing! Last weekend was my last run up to VT and although this weekend would have been perfect for one last hurrah, I'm glad I stayed home! I had an awesome, fun and most important - injury free season. Yay!! So goodbye Ludlow VT, see you next season!!

Ran 6 miles in the trail yesterday with 2 old friends. Not super fast, but for my first 6 in awhile I'm ok with it. The rest of the week is unplanned due to the crappy weather, so I'll probably stick with the gym - yoga and cardio until the weather breaks for some outside runs. This weekend is supposed to be in the 70's which is perfect for my first bike of the season. Not sure of the distance yet, maybe 20 or 25.

"Is this your first class?"

I think the worst statement an aspiring yogi ever wants to hear is probably "is this your first class".

True story - I'm at the gym on Tue at 10am, which is when all the Housewives of Babylon come out to play. Don't get me wrong, a lot of these women really work, but then there are the posers who hang by the clothing or the cafe, chat with their friends, gossip and make fun of others...it's a strange time.

So I go to class and I'm clearly the youngest, which is fine, but then I'm starting to see that this teacher is a little confused - getting her lefts and rights mixed up. Clearly not with it. So I'm in some down dog with leg up and over pose and instead of gently correcting me, she sort of yells "First class?". Uggh. I replied then managed to almost fall, total class #fail. It was not my best moment on the mat. Humbling, yes, best, no.

1st Day Light Savings Run!!

Now that I'm back to normal from my "lost hour" funk, and since the weather finally cleared, I ran my first evening run! Yahoo! I threw on shorts (shorts!!!!) my iPod and my Garmin and off I went. Nothing to report other than I ran, kept it in the 9's and just enjoyed being outside!

Oh and little hot picture action...taken right before I ran...

Day Light Savings is Not My Friend!

Ok, before I start my post (err, rant) I want everyone to know that I LOVE the extra hour of daylight, it makes me giddy a little, but those first few days....BRUTAL. I feel like a truck hit me! It's so crazy that one little hour could put my system into such a tizzy. Every year I prepare by making sure I drink extra water and go to bed early (seriously) and every year I end up feeling like shit the day after the switch. Ugg! This may end up being a nap-in-the-car-during-lunch kind of day. Anyone else have this kind of reaction?

Need to Run!!

I really need to run, like bad. The weather here has been amazing, but I've been so crazy that I have not been able to enjoy much of it. This past weekend I was up skiing, yesterday I had work then the doc then dance and tonight is just as busy! Ahh! I'll have to get up and out before work tomorrow, which I'm all about these days.

My back is still bugging me, although it was fine this weekend when skiing, I'm starting to think that sitting at a desk all day long is part of the reason why I'm not healing. The chiro is still the chiro - I don't love it, but I'm getting used to it. Not sure I'll continue on past this month though. I will say that I noticed a difference in my skiing, almost like I was standing taller....he said that would happen...I just wish he wasn't so outside of my budget!

I'm hoping it doesn't rain this weekend as I have a few options for some local races, a 15k that is crazy hilly, a 10 mile tune up and maybe just a run with my club. I haven't ran more than 6 miles, so to the 10 mile run may be a bit ambitious...I'll be happy with 5 miles!

Pain!

Ok, so this back thing really sucks. I'm 5 sessions in with the chiropractor and I'm not feeling better, I get the whole it might get worse before it gets better line, but I'm ready for some healing!! We narrowed the pain down to the T4 and T5 section, which he said is the hardest to heal because it's an area that is always moving (or something like that), which I believe, the weirdest movements cause me pain, like slightly bending over to brush my teeth....I'm guessing that I'm going to have perfect posture by the time this is all over! I'm just hoping that the time and money is worth it, because it's taking up a big chunk of both!

Well despite being uncomfortable, I managed to get a few workouts in this week! I got in 2 teeny tiny runs, a yoga class (just no plow pose) and my tap class with the girls. I may take a yoga class tonight for some stretching, then it's back to the chiro tomorrow then off to VT to ski. On a side note I did discuss my level of activity with the Doc and he said it was OK, so I'm going with it for now. I'm cautious with my level of exertion, so I don't think I'm doing more harm than good...

On a side note, I had the most delish frozen dinner last night! On a whim I bought the Kashi Mayan Harvest Bake and my god was it good! I usually stay away from the frozen stuff unless it's a veggie burger, but this looked so good that I just had to try it. For rizz, this may have been the best thing I've had in a while!! Go out and try it (an sadly Kashi does not read my blog, so I'm not endorsing them or anything where I would have to have a disclaimer about this delish dish).

Headcold, Running and the Chiropractor!

And I thought a bum knee was bad! I'm hating my back right now, I hurt it about a month ago while coming out of plow pose incorrectly (a number of times), stupid I know, but now I'm at the mercy of a chiropractor who I'm hoping will fix me. He wants to see me 3 times a week, and even though he is reasonable, it's a bit much for my budget. I'm committing to a month, then I'll see where I'm at 'cuz to be honest, I'm not really loving it. I know people who swear by this guy (and other chiro's) then there are those who feel the whole thing is a sham. While I don't think it's a sham, I don't want to be a slave the adjustments for the rest of my life. So I guess I'll reevaluate the whole thing at the end of the month.

So after 3 weeks of no running, I ran a quick 2 miles yesterday. I wasn't feeling great, but the weather was so nice and the snow almost gone, so I figured I'd head out to the docks and back. I took it slow (and not on purpose, I'm just slow) about a 10 minute pace, and although my goal was to not stop, I had to twice....the chiropractor adjusted me right into a head cold and I just couldn't breathe! It was great getting out there though! I'm taking today off, but am planning on running tomorrow morning before work. Maybe for (gasp) 3 miles. We'll see how much mucous is still in me!

Gulp...

I got an email from Runners World stating that half marathon training starts today....guess I better get on that!

1st half - The Long Island Half May 1!!

Epic Workout Sesh...ala "The Situation"

I was very Jersey Shore (the show, not the actual shore!!) this morning, I had an amazing strength workout that was much needed! I'm a cardio queen, which is good, but I really need to consistently add in the weights. I used to go to the 6am sculpt class...back when I was a morning gal, but I actually got up this morning and went, and I feel absolutely fantastic!

This week is spotty, but I'm going to try to get some quality workouts in:
Monday: 6am sculpt
Tuesday: 6am spin, followed by some abs/arms
Weds: 6:30am yoga
Thurs - Sun: Skiing!!!!!

I Love Going to the Office in the Snow!

Ahh, snow, glorious snow! How I love you when I'm in VT skiing, not when I'm on Long Island working! We are in the process of getting dumped on, possible blizzard, but because I have a strong work ethic (umm...nope, just work for a company that never closes) I'm in my office...blogging! At least they are buying us lunch!

Ok, so onto running! I ran 6 miles last week, then that was it...nothing except some skiing. Was hoping to get another trail run in this weekend, but I doubt it with the snow. I'll have to dreadmill it. I've also decided to jump back on the Team in Training bandwagon with the new Team Deep Purple, special for alumni! A friend is also nudging me to run the Fairfield CT Half, it's in June so I'll probably sign up.

I'm looking at some other races, I figure it's about time I get my spring calendar going!

Mornings! Whaaaa!!!

Why is it so hard for me to get up and do any physical activity in the morning?!?!? Every night I set my alarm for 5:40 so I can head to the gym by 6am....and every morning I roll back over and reset the clock for 7:30. It's so crazy to me! Especially since I am in bed most nights by 10 - 10:30! I need to incorporate mornings if I want to have any chance of maintaining a decent sched. My life is so busy that most nights I am booked, meaning no time for a workout. Weekends are shot because of skiing.....ahh...luxury problems! I need a sound strategy, or a kick in the ass...not sure which will work better!!

6ish Miles/6ish Degrees

Woa, so Long Island was crazy cold this weekend, like stay under the covers and don't leave the house cold. BUT, because I'm working on my fitness in a big way this winter, I was up and out to meet my club at 7am on Sat. It was great to see everyone and be back on the trail (it's been awhile). We ran the Dirty Sock 10k route which is right in my town and luckily is covered by trees to block most of the wind. I purposely didn't wear my Garmin, I wanted this to be fun and stress free, I also didn't want to obsess about how slow I have gotten. It proved to be a great decision. I was pretty happy with the run, I held my own, stayed middle of the pack for most of it and generally felt good. The most I have run in the last few weeks has been 3 miles in the dark, so this was huge for me! The only downside was the fact that my poor thighs were crazy red and a little itchy for hours after. I wore the right base layers, but I guess running in 6 degree temps will do that to ya!

Back Out There!

So after my little non-running break, I decided to get back on the old horse and run! We've had mild temps the past few days so I figured a little night running would be ok. I ran just under 3 miles on a pretty well lit out and back course. I did wear my trusty head lamp (I so heart that thing) for good measure, which definitely helped. My times sucked and I felt a little out of breath, but I'm still pleased. My knee felt good, which was my main reason for taking a break. I'm thinking of taking this weekend off skiing, which means a nice run with either my club who I have neglected or a new running store in town. Woo-hoo!

Did We Breakup?

Umm...I think I may have broken up with running, I didn't mean to and at first I thought I was just casually flirting with other activities, but now I think it's more like full on cheating....what would Dear Abby say? Am I an adulterer of the very sport that has sort of catapulted me into this whole fitness...well, thing I do? Gah! It's just so complicated. At first our early days were so so, then we hit the hot and heavy stage, then I got hurt and now the hurt is still lingering, so I needed a break, but now I feel guilty...and maybe a little angry....so I've resorted to cheating!

Ok, so here is the real story, I used to love running, got fast, tore my acl, got slow, then got fast again, then gained some weight, got slower and more annoyed, followed by knee pain, followed by frustration, followed by lots of yoga and no running (except for a mile here and there on the mill).

Now what? I'm in this in-between stage where I'm ready to get out there and hit the pavement, but I'm loving some of this other stuff more, and really, there are just so many hours in the day! So my grand plan is to.....just take it easy! What a concept! Winter is hard for me, between skiing and no light after work so instead of getting stressed, I'm going to roll with it. If I was sedentary, that would be a whole other story, but I'm eating right, spinning, doing some weight training, mixed in with easy running and lots of yoga....so maybe cheating isn't so bad after all!!

Umm...Not Sure What to Name This One...

I'm starting to miss not regularly running. It's been a little snowy and cold, plus I've been away, so it's been treadmill hell. I was up in Boston this past weekend, hoping maybe to run outside, but again, the weather held me back so I ran a bit on the 'mill. Oh, how I HATE the 'mill.

This weekend I'm off to VT to ski, so it looks like another run-free weekend. The following weekend I'm planing on a Sun run with an old group I used to run with, they do Tue night track workouts and a long Sun run...I've also decided to jump back on the Team in Training band wagon. They have a new group for alums called Team Deep Purple, sounds fun, I can train for multiple events and the fundraising is pretty low. So it's a win win!!

I think this winter, like the past few will be hard for me, but I'm determined to get as many runs in as possible. Trying to figure out a March race to keep me motivated, maybe a half somewhere not too far? I'm willing to travel, so I'll have to check out what's out there. I wish the NYC Half was not a lottery...
